Do I have to move out during water damage restoration?

Usually not. For most residential water losses, the affected rooms get contained and dried while the rest of the house stays livable — the real costs of staying are noise (drying equipment runs 24/7 and sounds like steady white noise) and losing the use of the wet rooms for a few days. The stay/go line moves when the loss is large, when sewage is involved near living spaces, or when vulnerable people (infants, immunocompromised, severe asthma) are in the home.

If you do stay: the equipment must keep running — shutting it off at night adds days to the dry-out and risk to the structure. We set containment so conditioned air and dust stay where they belong, and route cords and hoses so the rest of the house works.

If the loss forces you out, keep every receipt: policies with loss-of-use (Additional Living Expense) coverage reimburse reasonable costs when a covered loss makes the home uninhabitable. That is a policy question — we will document the conditions honestly either way, and the documentation is what the ALE claim leans on.
